The recovery after the war wasn’t easy because many people decided  to migrate in search for better opportunities. Since the province wasn’t a densely populated area that created some imbalances.

This was made even more difficult by 2 natural disasters which took place in the 60s.

Firstly, on the 9th of October, 1963 a landslide from Mount Toc, located right above the impressive Vajont’s dam in the Longarone area, fell into the dam causing an enormous wave of water that took the lives of 200 people of Longarone. This disaster caused destruction also in the lower parts of the province, because of the great amount of fast water passing through many neighbourhoods of various towns along the Piave river. This event generated a massive chain of aids coming not only from all over Italy but also from foreign countries. Even the president of the italian republic, at the time Antonio Segni, decided to visit the place to witness with his own eyes the destruction.

Secondly, in 1966 a flood caused a humanitarian emergency with 15.000 flooded, 300 homeless and a lot of factories, houses and bridges damaged.

Putting to the test the local social fabric already torn by the tragedy of 1963.

These events caused an awakening for the local politicians and governments to double the efforts to re-start Belluno’s industrial complex and realize that they should be very cautious and attentive to the fragile environment around us. Which led to investments to preserve the wild and natural patrimony of this mountainous area.

On a more positive note, in 1956 Cortina hosted the VII winter olympics games. The event gave great visibility to the territory with many internationals being fascinated by the beauty of the Tofane mountains. The event gained attention because it was the first international event of his kind to host the then Soviet Union.
